Cerny

Cerny couldn’t stop hearing Lucifer’s words. They echoed through his head like a fearsome wind, like a distant scream.

He took mine, too.

Gabriel had severed Luc’s wings … how long ago? It had been millennia since Lucifer Fell. And Luc had been suffering all that time? It was fear and pain that Cerny had seen in Lucifer’s eyes when he pulled him into a hug, overwhelmed with the urge to make everything better, to hunt down Gabriel and kill him for hurting his best friend.

For what Gabriel had done to Lili, Cerberus would kill him. For what he’d done to Luc, they’d make it slow.

Cerny’s legs went weak, his arms out at his sides for balance as Bernard released him, sifting magic twisting his stomach until it cramped with sickness. He managed not to vomit but it was a close call.

“Shit,” Bernard hissed, the first to recover from the relocation magic. “Russ, give me a fucking sword.”

Cerny lifted his head, blinking his vision back into place, and inhaled sharply. They’d sifted to the edge of the Forest of Halwen, under cover of the trees, but the long road between Jast and Iarlon was visible beyond the wheat field, the breach like a tattered rip in the sky, the edges drifting in a sharp wind. And below it, thousands of angels in golden and silver armour, their shields locked edge to edge as they pushed against the lines of demons—both in the sky and on land. The small band of soldiers Luc had stationed here to push the angels back was losing.

Rapidly.

But if the angels got past that road, if they entered the forest … they’d unleash themselves upon the camp of refugees. Maybe even sully the paradise full of worthy souls mere miles beyond the refugee camp. If Heaven took out the paradise and the camp, what was left of Hell? Without their people…

“Get to your generals,” Cerny told Bernard as his brother lurched out from under the tree cover, sifting magic already whipping him across the battlefield. “Tell them to hold the damn line. Russ, stay with me.”

Cerny drew the sword from his back and reached for his link to Lucifer.

Luc. We’re beneath the breach—

So am I. Busy, Luc bit back, and Cerny’s heart clenched. For Lucifer to be fighting in the middle of this mayhem and desperation and hatred, in his current state … this wasn’t going to end well.

Archangels? he asked.

None yet, Luc replied tersely. Do me a favour and take out this asshole, he’s using some sort of enhancement. I assume it’s one of the god-blessed weapons Sarathiel mentioned.

Luc pressed an image into Cerny’s mind: a golden-armoured, brawny angel with black hair and ivory wings, flying swiftly through the skies above them, rallying the tight lines of wing soldiers.

“Russ,” Cerny said, sending an agreement to Luc and glancing at his brother as Russ fabricated a lightweight shield, strapping it to his left arm. “We’ve got a job to do.”

“As Cerberus?” his brother asked, scanning the field of noise and blood and order, looking for Bernard so they could merge.
